Our goal is to destigmatize abortion care and demystify what abortion looks like.
With patient written and verbal consent, we photographed pictures of pregnancy tissue after suction abortions. Patients who complete a medication abortion can photograph their own pregnancy tissue and submit their photos.

What’s A suction abortion?
A suction abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. During the procedure, suction is used to remove pregnancy tissue. This can be done with or without sedation. The procedure is quick, safe, and effective.
Pregnancy tissue breaks apart during the suction procedure. Clinic staff look at the tissue closely to verify that all pregnancy tissue was removed and that the procedure is complete. Some people choose to look at their pregnancy tissue – this can include touching or taking a picture, while others aren’t interested in looking.
What’s a medication abortion?
A medication abortion is taking pills to end a pregnancy. Two different medications are used 24-48 hours apart. The first medication, mifepristone, stops the pregnancy from growing. The second medication, misoprostol, produces cramping and bleeding like a heavy period until the pregnancy is expelled. The process is similar to an early miscarriage and is completed at home.
