About This Project

In 2024, WE Health Clinic began collecting images of pregnancy tissue. This was an effort to normalize, destigmatize, and demystify what abortion looks like. 

With our patient-centered approach, all patients have the option to view their pregnancy tissue after a suction procedure, and are informed on what it will look like. Patients who have a medication abortion are also instructed on what they might see if they choose to look at their tissue at home. However, clinic staff found that there was a lack of resources and images to educate patients on what they can expect to see. There is also a lack of accurate information on what abortion looks like available for public access. At the same time, we are bombarded with misinformation and inaccurate representations of abortion from anti-choice organizations on billboards, posters, pamphlets, and online. 

Patient participation in the project is completely optional and confidential and we are incredibly grateful to our patients who have chosen to share. These images are for people having an abortion or a miscarriage – to know what to expect, for health care providers – to guide patients, and for anyone who is curious to learn.
